| Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is commonly performed to remove excess lower tummy skin sometimes occurring after pregnancy or after significant weight loss. The procedure usually re-contours the abdomen by removing excess skin and repairing the muscles in the middle of the tummy. Surgery can also involve lifting the outer hips, inner thighs or even the buttocks, depending upon what is required. This procedure is commonly performed under local or general anaesthesia depending on how much is to be done.
Tummy tuck is most often combined with liposuction and breast surgery. Recovery from the operation greatly depends on whether a muscle repair was done. Typically patients may return to sitting type occupations in about 2 weeks, but heavy lifting will not usually be permitted for 6 weeks following muscle repair.
