| A breast lift operation may involve implants or may be done without implants. If a significant amount of extra skin is to be removed, then the breasts will appear lifted but also smaller. If the problem involves both too much skin and too little volume, then both skin removal and implants may be used to lift the breasts and increase size. There are two general types of breast lift used, depending on how much skin needs to be removed. Either the skin is removed from the area just around the nipple, or it is removed so that the scars are in an anchor shape, an "L" shape, or some variation. You can think of the breast in terms of its components. There is a covering of skin and a filling of fat and breast tissue. When there is "drooping" of the breast we can either reduce the covering or increase the filling, or both. It is easy to imagine this if you think of the analogy of a pillow. To make the pillow firmer, you can reduce the size of the pillowcase or fill the pillow with more feathers, or a little of both. Deciding which is best for you is part of the art of plastic surgery. Breast lifts may be necessary if there is too much skin. Dr. Callegari can discuss this with you in detail upon consultation. Breast lift is usually done under general anaesthesia and recovery is usually 10 to 14 days. |
